Creative Writing Since ARRCCwrite, our creative writing group, was formed in 2002 six booklets of our Member's work have been published to coincide with the annual Art Exhibition. But these booklets are only representative of the huge amount of moving, humorous, heartfelt and profound writing produced over the past years. Although creative writing is usually associated with that novel we are all supposed to have burning within us, there is growing evidence to indicate that writing about our memories and feelings has the potential for therapeutic growth and change. This is encouraged through individual and group activities. If members are unable to write for themselves, trained helpers will act as if they are the 'hand' of the author, making sure that they do not alter or direct the spoken word. As ARRCCwrite members have gained confidence and seen their work in print they have been keen to develop their story telling skills. As one member, George, a stroke survivor and 'well-travelled, proud patriotic Scot' says: ' When it was suggested I do some creative writing, I thought 'Oh no!' My only writing experience to date had been time sheets and visit reports, even then my secretary corrected the English and grammar. But the group were very enthusiastic, so, what the hell, I'll give it a go. With a lot of help and encouragement from our tutor who helped with ideas and techniques, I gave it a go and I was amazed how it changed my approach to life. I am more inspired, encouraged and happy with my life. Everyone should try it.' See Gallery for more |
